On the Horizon

Quick update from our first playtest then I’ll jump into what’s happening next progress and all that jazz! After our playtest last week we got some great feedback after a slight hiccup of showing the wrong build quickly fixed though! We noticed a few things when watching people play on the controllers and issues with colliders which we quickly fixed!

Still crazy to think this time next week we’ll be showing you our Vertical Slice, to sum up, all of the work we’ve done this semester into a playable demo of what’s to come. Anyway with the Vertical Slice on the horizon what does this all mean?

Our Vertical Slice is basically here to show off all the core gameplay elements of our game. So this means having the map completed, players can race against each other and place obstacles.

We did a second playtest today with our friends over at Orrito. We received some really good constructive feedback from the movement to the map.

Movement and Camera

We’ll be making adjustments to the movement to fine tune it to make it feel smoother. We also found a bug of respawns and the momentum staying after respawning making it difficult to control after falling. The camera was also slightly buggy when respawning.

The Map

We’ll be making the platforms wider to make the tutorial slightly easier to get to grips with the controls. We’ll also be adding railings to the sides making it less difficult to fall off.

Some of these are easily fixed though and it's great to get feedback which will ultimately benefit the game in the long run.

Obstacle Implementation

We’re also busy implementing obstacles we want in for the Vertical Slice - it wasn’t realistic trying to get them all with design balancing, programming functionality, modelling, VFX and animation.

With all these aspects what might seem like a small task is actually quite time-consuming. But what comes with this is also adjusting camera positions for placing an obstacle.  We have an idea for how it will work, causing the players to make quick decisions when placing to keep up with the pace of the game.

Unfortunately not much this week in terms of updates but keep an eye out next week for our vertical slice. As always keep up to date with our progress on our Twitter and Instagram @boscadubhgames
